Initially established in 1952, home to Japan’s leading Modernist designers including Isamu Kenmochi, Riki Watanabe and Katsuhira Toyoguchi. Kenmochi’s famous C-3160 rattan armchair became the first Japanese design to be inducted into the MoMA NYC collection. Riki Watanabe’s Torii stool is acknowledged as a masterpiece, winner of Japan’s first Gold Prize at the 1957 Triennale di Milano. It remains immensely popular more than half a century after its launch.
Every piece in the collection is meticulously crafted by hand in Japan, by artisans devoted to producing iconic rattan furniture using traditional time honoured techniques. YMK craftsmen are passionate about creating custom-made rattan furniture; Kenmochi’s famous rattan ensemble uses 3 different signature rattans and gives the rattan the impression of being ‘hand-knitted’.
The company’s philosophy remains ‘to respond to the ideas and sensibilities of designers with the skills and wisdom of craftsmen’.
