ISAMU KENMOCHI
(1912 - 1971)
Isamu Kenmochi is regarded as Japan’s most important modernist designer, the first to combine the ideas of European rationalism and traditional Japanese technology. His Rattan Chair
(C-3160) was the first piece of 20th Century Japanese furniture design to be added to the New York MoMA Permanent Collection.
A contemporary of Isamu Noguchi, together they developed a number of furniture designs, pioneering the Japanese Modern style. In 1955, he founded his own company, Kenmochi Design Associates, which continues his legacy today.
