The C-3150-I rattan armchair was released by the Kenmochi Design Institute in 1960. An evolution of the famous C-3160 armchair, it was specifically designed for the Otone Country Club in Bando, Ibaraki.
It is unusual among Kenmochi’s signature rattan series in that it uses steel legs. With 3 types of rattan, the sophisticated fine weaving technique and beautiful detailing give the rattan the impression of being ‘hand-knitted’ by craftsmen.
The Isamu Kenmochi collection is handmade to order and has been in continuous production since the 1950s.
ISAMU KENMOCHI
(1912 - 1971)
Isamu Kenmochi is regarded as Japan’s most important modernist designer, the first to combine the ideas of European rationalism and traditional Japanese technology. His Rattan Chair (C-3160) was the first piece of 20th Century Japanese furniture design to be added to the New York MoMA Permanent Collection.
A contemporary of Isamu Noguchi, together they developed a number of furniture designs, pioneering the Japanese Modern style.
In 1955, he founded his own company, Kenmochi Design Associates, which continues his legacy today.
