JOSÉ ZANINE CALDAS
1919 - 2001
José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) was one of the most original Brazilian designers. A self-taught maquette-creator and architect, in 1949 Zanine established “Moveis Artísticos Z” in São Paulo, a pioneering company in the design of modern plywood furniture. By the end of the 1960s, back in his home state of Bahia, he began to experiment with what he called “Outcry Furniture”: a more basic and environmentally-conscious approach to chiseling furniture from large pieces of timber.
As a tribute to his centenary in 2019, ETEL with the supervision of his family, reissued the line “Moveis Artísticos Z”. These pieces followed Caldas’ “Outcry Furniture” philosophy of valuing handcrafting and sustainable practices.
