The inspiration came from traditional Japanese tea rooms and was initially created to take to an exhibition in Germany. The designers wanted to make something Japanese-ish, that made the tea room portable. Referencing Japanese decorative and staggered shelves, it can be disassembled for travel and makes a beautiful decorative display in any home. A secret draw at the base can be used to store incense.
Made from Kuri timber, Japanese chestnut wood, a hardwood known for its strength, moisture resistance and unique grain. It is used in traditional high-end furniture and instruments due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. The wood’s distinctive look is enhanced with a traditional black stain and Japanese bamboo walking stick
YOSHIYUKI AND JUNKO HORIBE
Husband and wife team Yoshiyuki and Junko Horibe create their beautiful designs in their workshop, a renovated old Japanese house in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan.
Their work redefines time honoured Japanese design, taking traditional timbers and craftsmanship into a fresh new direction, open to the influence of international design. The timber they select not only has unique aesthetic qualities and fragrances but also benefits such as emitting compounds that have a relaxing effect.
They emphasise functionality in their work, carefully selecting and combining finishes and materials to create their designs.
