MARCEL BREUER

1902 - 1981

In 1925, Marcel Breuer became head of the furniture workshop in Dessau.

It was here that he devised a radical idea for chairs using tubular steel, which sparked the beginning of modern furniture design. One of the most important pieces of furniture of the 20th century, the B3 Chair (or Club Chair and the Wassily) was one of the first to be made of tubular steel.

The metal frame was inspired by a bicycle frame and the use of tubular steel required the minimum use of material to achieve maximum strength. The cantilever chair meant freedom from rigid throne-like sitting and the dawn of the modern era of furniture design can be traced to Bauhaus designers today.
