With its sculpted back, the GS armchair is one of the most striking pieces from Giuseppe Scapinelli, created in the 1950s. This memorable armchair has sinuous shapes that are somehow dazzling and futuristic.
GIUSEPPE SCAPINELLI
1891 - 1982
Italian architect Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in Modena and adopted Brazil as his home in 1948. He was very successful in the 1950s, having opened a furniture and carpet factory (Fábrica de Móveis Giesse and Fábrica de Tapetes Santa Helena), as well as two showrooms (Le Rideau and Margutta, where he had his studio) in São Paulo.
His style was easily recognised. Scapinelli was quite conservative when compared to his peers. While they invested in sharp corners, his chairs had soft curves, slender tapered legs and delicate metal details.
