Designed in 1959, the Dinamarquesa takes cues from mid-century Danish design; fittingly, its name means Danish girl in Portuguese. Jorge Zalszupin’s chair is characterised by its elegant, clean lines and delicate frame. Intricate timber inlay in the arms displays the exquisite craftmanship that’s gone into the construction.
The organic shapes and simple, clean lines in the Dinamarquesa armchair references modern Scandinavian design, especially to the work of Hans Wegner (1914- 2007) and Finn Juhl (1912-1989), an influence Jorge Zalszupin readily admits to. “It’s there even today. I even called my first chair Danish 30”
Niemeyer was another influence “Designed in 1959, it is an armchair made in Brazilian rosewood and cushions, with thin, tapering legs. The design of the arms and front legs is reminiscent of the columns made by Niemeyer for the Alvorada Palace”. Zalszupin.
JORGE ZALSZUPIN
1922 -2020
He studied during the war and, when he graduated, in 1945, he felt so disillusioned with the devastation he saw in his hometown that he decided he would leave to look for other lands. After a spell in France, he came to Brazil, where he encountered the right conditions to develop his unique, poetical, sensual and modern brand of architecture.
In the 1960s and 1970s, his work could be seen in pretty much every public building in Brasília. At the factory, a first-world structure mobilized designers, architects, engineers, craftsmen and a wide range of professionals who worked together through all stages, from the research of materials to the final product.
