CW, an abbreviation for ‘combination wood’, is a series that reflects the designers’ ambition to redefine the use of Japanese woods. The seat is made from Hinoki wood, a type of Japanese cypress that has long been used for its beauty, durability and delicate, natural fragrance.
Hand finished with a contemporary take on the traditional Urushi laquer finish. Typically a traditional Japanese art form that uses the sap of the lacquer tree to create durable, high-gloss finishes on objects like pottery, wood, and metal. This natural lacquer has a history in Japan stretching back over 9,000 years.
Contrasting with the polished aluminium, the painted lacquer finish is available in black, orange, navy or mint with a subtle texture of the lacquer application.
YOSHIYUKI AND JUNKO HORIBE
Husband and wife team Yoshiyuki and Junko Horibe create their beautiful designs in their workshop, a renovated old Japanese house in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan.
Their work redefines time honoured Japanese design, taking traditional timbers and craftsmanship into a fresh new direction, open to the influence of international design. The timber they select not only has unique aesthetic qualities and fragrances but also benefits such as emitting compounds that have a relaxing effect.
They emphasise functionality in their work, carefully selecting and combining finishes and materials to create their designs.
