JOAQUIM TENREIRO

1906- 2022

Born in Portugal in 1906, but moved to Brazil as a child. He settled in Rio de Janeiro in 1928, where he began making furniture in traditional styles. In 1941, he was commissioned to design furniture for a home designed by Oscar Niemeyer, one of many collaborations with the architect. In 1942, Tenreiro broke completely with tradition and created his first chair in the modern style, based on the notion that Brazilian furniture should be free of excessive ornamentation and designed with the Brazilian climate and lifestyle in mind, using native hard woods and other materials, such as wicker. Tenreiro’s pieces were constructed by Brazilian woodworkers familiar with native woods and traditional working techniques. He continued designing furniture until the late 1960s, when he devoted himself to painting and sculpture
